Official Event Invocation

A Prayer of Deepest Thanksgiving & Remembrance

Heavenly Father, Almighty God,

We stand before You today with humbled hearts on these quiet grounds, free because of the sacrifices made by brave men and women throughout our nation’s history.

We offer You this prayer of deepest thanksgiving—for the blessing of liberty, for the strength of our community, and for the priceless freedom we so often take for granted. We recognize that this freedom was bought with a heavy price.

Today, Lord, we hold up in sacred remembrance the nineteen souls of Task Force Ranger who gave their ultimate measure in the streets of Mogadishu. We have spoken their names today so they will never be forgotten:

May we live lives worthy of their sacrifice. In Your holy name we pray,
Amen.

19 Limestone Memorials Covered in Florals & Fall Colors

Along Queenslake’s historic dry-laid limestone wall, each of the 19 fallen warriors of Task Force Ranger is honored with a permanent engraved memorial station. For the 6th Annual Mogadishu Mile Kentucky, each station has been beautifully landscaped with vibrant autumn chrysanthemums in brilliant gold, purple, and bronze, accented by heirloom pumpkins and gourds.

Whether running the tactical course, rucking with team gear, taking a reflective stroll, or riding the volunteer Dever Golf Carts courtesy shuttles, every participant and visitor has the sacred opportunity to visit all 19 stations, touch the stones, read the citations, and pay tribute to America's finest.

PUSHUPS ON NORMANDY BEACH: HOW AN AGONIZING SAND CRUCIBLE BECAME A BATTLEFIELD MEDITATION

Forged Steel Czech Hedgehogs, Synchronized 4-Count Lockouts, and Honoring the 19 Fallen on Simulated Sands

"Six years ago, we began a tradition at Queenslake Horse Farm—a solemn vow to ensure that the nineteen fallen heroes of the Battle of Mogadishu were never forgotten. Over those years, the Mogadishu Mile Kentucky has grown, beginning with a Scottish bagpiper and a silent procession of magnificent black Friesian horses pulling a flag-draped caisson and casket across our pastures. This raw emotion, this unwavering support, is not limited to that one fateful day in October 1993. Only by supporting all veterans equally do we make our annual tribute truly meaningful."

It was this very spirit that drove our steel and welder partners to forge the iconic metal structures that once lined Normandy Beach—the fierce Czech hedgehogs (cheq crosses)—witness to one of history's most horrific battles where so many brave soldiers fell.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Mogadishu Mile returned to Queenslake as Kentucky’s original, longest-running, and premier annual tribute, fast becoming known nationally as a farm dedicated to honoring heroes. While we added a massive lakeside music festival in partnership with Guitars for Veterans and equipped teams with tactical replicas, the crucible of the dreaded pushup station remained under our control.

We needed a challenge worthy of the memory of those nineteen heroes. We needed something that would push our cadets and participants to the limit, while honoring a legendary past. And so, "Pushups on Normandy Beach" was born.

The Crucible • EKU & Univ. of the Cumberlands ROTC

From Physical Fitness Test to Battlefield Meditation

Participating units, including ROTC cadets from Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) and the University of the Cumberlands, were no longer required to just do synchronized pushups. We added a severe penalty for failure to lock out. Cadets were ordered to form up in the cold sand, holding an agonizing military 4-count pushup just five feet from those formidable cheq crosses that define our Normandy Beach replica.

As their muscles screamed, the cadets were not just enduring the standard calisthenics crucible of years past. As they strained against the sand, they were directly facing a powerful reminder of sacrifices made by an earlier generation, more than four score later. That proximity transformed the entire exercise from a physical fitness test into a battlefield meditation.

They were honoring the nineteen heroes of Black Hawk Down while doing pushups on the same simulated sands of Normandy.

Building a Reservoir of Eternal Respect

Our Master Reference Guide reminds us that our sacred mission is to Run, Honor, and Remember. By creating a powerful link between two of our nation’s most desperate moments—the urban streets of Mogadishu and the shoreline of France—we create a stronger, unified chain of support for all who have served.

That unshakeable support is why discussions with "The Wall That Heals" about a dual-sponsored Vietnam tribute are ongoing, and why we will be adding new permanent memorials along our wooded trails to the thirteen heroes lost at Abbey Gate and the fallen of current conflicts. The Mogadishu Mile Kentucky is catching the nation's notice not because we isolate our grief, but because we embrace the entire veteran community. We are not just making memories; we are building a reservoir of eternal respect.

For the 6th Annual Mogadishu Mile Kentucky, Lowe's stepped up heavily to ensure the sacred paths where our runners and ruckers tread were dignified, beautifully landscaped, and structurally sound for generations to come.

19 Mogadishu Memorial Posts & Florals

Lowe's provided the robust timber posts, mounting hardware, and vibrant autumn chrysanthemums lining the woodland rock wall, creating an enduring sanctuary for each of the 19 Task Force Ranger heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on October 3-4, 1993.

New Abbey Gate Memorial Expansion

Even in the middle of Lowe's high-pressure annual inventory season—when store operations are pushed to the max—both Amandas worked diligently with our race committee every single day. They coordinated timber orders, verified precision cuts, gathered memorial post fixtures, and hand-selected lush autumn mums so our fallen heroes received the tribute they deserve.

"Your tireless work ethic, kindness, and devotion to our military families is the beating heart of Lowe's community spirit. Thank you, Amanda & Amanda!"

HEALING THROUGH HARMONY: THE JOSLIN BROTHERS MENTOR 8 COMBAT VETERANS & CLOSE QUEENSLAKE WITH A TEARFUL "DRIFT AWAY" FINALE

How Music Replaced Trauma, Reclaimed Brotherhood, and Brought an Entire Audience to Its Feet on the Shores of Queenslake

"For several of these warriors, just walking onto that stage under the lights in front of a crowd was yet another profound act of bravery. Watching them take their guitars, conquer that fear, and play from their souls was nothing short of miraculous."
— The Joslin Brothers (Jeffrey & Justice Joslin)

Behind every chord struck on the Queenslake waterfront stage was a story of survival. Eight brave combat veterans—each of whom received a brand-new acoustic guitar and structured instruction through Guitars for Veterans (G4V) to help alleviate the unseen, debilitating wounds of battlefield trauma and severe PTSD—arrived at Queenslake not just as students, but as artists on a journey of recovery.

Before the crowds filled the lawn, headline artists Jeffrey and Justice Joslin gathered with the eight veteran guitarists on the quiet grounds outside Queenslake Manor. There was no pretense, no celebrity distance—just brothers and fellow musicians sharing tips, tuning strings, calming pre-show tremors, and reminding each warrior that their story mattered.

A timeless blend of CCR grit, Hall & Oates soul, and Springsteen storytelling.

Courage Under the Lights: Crushing the Sets

When the festival commenced, each of the eight veterans took the 40'x30' covered truss stage. To an outsider, it was a beautiful musical showcase; but to anyone who understands the daily battle of post-traumatic stress, stepping out from the shadows and performing in front of hundreds of people is a terrifying obstacle.

Yet one by one, these eight heroes took the mic, leaned into their guitars, and absolutely crushed their sets. Songs born in hospital rooms, therapy sessions, and quiet bedrooms were released into the open Kentucky air, met with roaring applause and standing ovations from tactical runners, adaptive athletes, and community members alike.

Following the veterans, The Joslin Brothers took over the stage, unleashing their signature "relax and let go" sound. Rich analog textures, soaring soulful vocals, and warm acoustic rhythms echoed across the 40-acre lake, providing the perfect musical sanctuary after a grueling morning on the Mogadishu Mile tactical course.

The Unforgettable Climax

The Historic 10-Guitar "Drift Away" Ensemble

"Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul... I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away..."

For the grand finale that concluded the entire dual event, Jeffrey and Justice Joslin did not close alone. They invited all eight veteran guitarists back onto the mainstage together.

Ten guitars locked into rhythm. Jeffrey’s soulful keys and vocals led the way as all eight veterans strummed in powerful unison, performing a soaring, once-in-a-lifetime rendition of the Dobie Gray classic "Drift Away."

As the chorus washed over the lake, the entire crowd rose to their feet. Tears streamed down the faces of Gold Star family members, runners, and seasoned combat veterans as hundreds of voices joined together in harmony. It was not merely a concert finale—it was a triumph of the human spirit, a testament to the power of music to heal deep trauma, and a moment that will forever echo in the history of Queenslake.

Drawing inspiration from the timeless spirit of CCR, the soulful sophistication of Hall & Oates, and the heartland storytelling of Bruce Springsteen, The Joslin Brothers brought unmatched generosity and heart to Queenslake, cementing a lifelong bond with our nation’s heroes.

Official Special Announcement • October 3, 2026

GUEST OF HONOR: FORMER MARINE & SCOTT COUNTY DEPUTY JAIME MORALES TO SOLEMNLY READ THE NAMES OF THE 19 FALLEN

A Testament to Brotherhood, Sacrifice, and Unbreakable Human Will at the 6th Annual Mogadishu Mile Kentucky

"Every year at Queenslake, as the haunting notes of the bagpipes drift across our 40-acre lake and majestic Friesian horses draw the flag-draped caisson, hundreds of athletes and families stand in reverent silence. To have Deputy Jaime Morales—a warrior whose courage, sacrifice, and survival embody the deepest meaning of brotherhood—read aloud the names of our nineteen fallen heroes is the highest honor our Commonwealth could bestow."

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the 6th Annual Mogadishu Mile Kentucky will open with its most solemn and sacred tradition. At sunrise along the shores of Queenslake, Master Bagpiper Tore DeRolf will sound the morning lament while magnificent black Friesian horses slowly pull a flag-draped casket on a traditional military caisson around the 40-acre lake. As the caisson draws to a halt before assembled military squads, first responders, and Gold Star families, the names of the nineteen American heroes lost during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu will echo across the water.

This year, those nineteen sacred names will be spoken by a man whose own life stands as a monumental testament to service, sacrifice, and unbreakable resolve: Deputy Jaime Morales.

A Life of Unwavering Duty • Marine • Deputy • Survivor

1. U.S. Marine Corps Veteran

Corporal • Bridge Company • MCMAP Black Belt

Born in Colombia, Jaime immigrated to the United States as a young teenager and answered the call to serve his adopted nation in 2011. Serving as a Corporal in a Marine Bridge Company, he became a certified combat rescue swimmer and earned a black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP)—living out Semper Fidelis in every post.

2. Scott County Deputy Sheriff

Badge #217 • Joint Special Response Team (SRT)

Following his honorable military discharge, Jaime dedicated himself to protecting Kentucky citizens through the Scott County Sheriff's Office. Wearing Badge #217, he earned selection to the elite multi-jurisdictional Joint Special Response Team (SRT), executing high-risk tactical warrants and fugitive operations.

3. Line-of-Duty Sacrifice (9/11/2018)

I-75 Tactical Crucible • T1 SCI Survivor

On September 11, 2018, during a high-stakes multi-agency operation on I-75 in Scott County to apprehend an armed bank robbery fugitive, Jaime was critically wounded by friendly fire. The bullet shattered his T1 vertebra, causing a catastrophic spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

4. The "217 Strong" Movement

Paralympic Shooter • T2T Smart Home Recipient

Refusing to let paralysis define his destiny, Jaime turned Badge 217 into a worldwide rallying cry for adaptive athletics, mental resilience, and accountability. Today he trains as a competitive Paralympic shooter for Team USA, won a historic Kentucky Supreme Court precedent (709 S.W.3d 146), and was awarded a mortgage-free smart home by Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

From 34 Seconds of Chaos to a Lifetime of Inspiration

In a mere 34 seconds on September 11, 2018, Jaime Morales’s life was irrevocably transformed. But what could have shattered an ordinary spirit only revealed the titanium core within. Through months of intensive rehabilitation at Louisville’s Frazier Rehab Institute and relentless daily conditioning, Jaime rebuilt his body and turned his personal trial into a mission to uplift others.

Through his platform 217Strong.com and his social media dispatches (@217Strong), Jaime shares an unvarnished blueprint of mental toughness, adaptive fitness, and brotherhood. In May 2025, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation presented him with a mortgage-free, custom-adapted smart home in Georgetown, KY, recognizing his heroic sacrifice in the line of duty.

SIX YEARS OF KEEPING THEIR NAMES ALIVE: THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE MOGADISHU MILE KENTUCKY

"There is a saying in the military community that a soldier dies twice: once on the battlefield, and a second time when people stop speaking their name. To ward off that second death, our ultimate hope is that one day there will be dozens of Mogadishu Mile events across Kentucky—and we genuinely support every effort that honors our nation's fallen heroes."

When honoring warriors who gave everything in service to our nation, the setting matters. Sacrifices of this magnitude demand grounds that are reverent, majestic, and truly worthy of their memory. Queenslake was chosen not merely as a venue, but as a permanent sanctuary—an extraordinary 140-acre working horse farm framed by a pristine 40-acre lake, dozens of magnificent horses, rolling Bluegrass pastures, and sacred woodland trails. There is simply no other location in the Commonwealth that offers the vast scale, grandeur, and safety required to host hundreds of athletes, Gold Star families, and patriotic citizens without compromise.

In 2021, Queenslake set out with a clear, solemn purpose: to honor the fallen nineteen of Task Force Ranger and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. Grounded in the lifelong dedication of the Chmela family—inspired by patriarch Bill Chmela, a 92-year-old United States Air Force veteran—Queenslake permanently dedicated these grounds to our nation's military heroes. We are proud to serve as Kentucky’s original, longest-running, and premier annual Mogadishu Mile Kentucky tribute as we prepare for our 6th consecutive gathering at Queenslake Horse Farm on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

We acknowledge and welcome the growing interest in new Mogadishu Mile events across the Commonwealth. It is gratifying to see our operational blueprint and Queenslake event photography serving as a foundation for other organizers in Kentucky. We fully support every race taking up the mantle, and we consider each new tribute a major success for the cause.

Our core commitment remains unchanged: to keep the names of our nineteen fallen heroes alive. To anyone stepping up to organize a new event, we stand ready to help promote your efforts and share the operational standards Queenslake has developed over the past six years.

Let's work together to make Kentucky the premier state for honoring our veterans—spanning from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky to the banks of the Ohio River in Louisville. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and when it comes to honoring our fallen, expanding these tributes is a powerful way to ensure they are never forgotten.

Through it all, his acoustic guitar and the Guitars for Veterans community have served as a steadfast sanctuary of healing, focus, and strength. Living by the unshakeable truth that no matter how difficult the trial, warriors "stay in it to win it," Jeff steps onto the Queenslake waterfront stage to share raw acoustic melodies, honest country storytelling, and a message of hope and solidarity for every veteran fighting their own battles.

"At Queenslake, our mission to serve veterans started with a simple request back in 2019 from Chuck Reed and Kentucky Wounded Heroes: Can our veterans come fish your lake?"

They came for the peace, the camaraderie, and the mental health reset that quiet water brings. Those early fishing retreats sparked something much bigger—leading to our veteran dinners, live concerts, housing, and ultimately, six years of hosting the Mogadishu Mile Kentucky tribute.

Now, we are bringing that full-circle story back to where it all began—with an exclusive perk for our next event participants.

Bagpiper Tore DeRolf playing in the morning mist at Queenslake

A Sacred Queenslake Tradition • Six Consecutive Years

MOGADISHU BAGPIPER TORE DEROLF RETURNS FOR 6TH STRAIGHT YEAR

Ever since our inaugural event in 2021, the solemn, haunting notes of the Highland bagpipes echoing through the morning mist across Queenslake have served as the emotional heartbeat of our opening ceremonies. We are deeply honored to announce that master bagpiper Tore DeRolf is returning for his 6th consecutive year.

We cannot thank Tore enough for his steadfast devotion, artistry, and generous donation of time and talent year after year. Arriving before dawn, Tore's stirring bagpipe lament provides the solemn musical accompaniment to our signature tribute: the riderless Friesian horse and flag-draped caisson procession that walks the historic limestone trail honoring the nineteen fallen warriors of Task Force Ranger.

A Heart of Selfless Service & Community Tribute

Tore’s commitment to honoring others reaches far beyond race day. Just this month (September 2026), Tore generously joined us at Queenslake to play a poignant bagpipe tribute honoring the fallen heroes and victims of 9/11 during our American Cancer Society charity gala—an extraordinary evening where our community came together to raise over $250,000 for cancer research and patient assistance.

Opening Ceremony Lament

Echoing across the central lake at sunrise to begin the tribute.

Friesian Horse Caisson Accompaniment

Playing in unison with the solemn equine procession along the limestone wall.

"When Tore's pipes ring out across the water, time stands still. We reflect, we remember, and we honor those who gave everything for our country."

Obstacle Intelligence • Travis Manion Foundation & Under Armour Freedom

BREAKING NEWS: STATION #1 IS "PAIN" (THE BEAVERFIT GAUNTLET)

The race directors have officially revealed the opening crucible of the 2026 tactical trail. Situated on the lakeside lawn with the morning mist rising off Queenslake, Station #1 is officially named "PAIN".

Powered by the mobile BeaverFit tactical training trailer—presented in partnership with the Travis Manion Foundation ("If Not Me, Then Who...") and Under Armour Freedom—this opening station immediately tests every runner's mental fortitude, raw strength, and squad coordination.

How Station #1 Works:

  • Squad Choice of Discipline: Each of the four team runners chooses from a diverse series of physical challenges.
  • The Exercise Gauntlet: Disciplines include barbell deadlifts, heavy kettlebell swings, 400lb agricultural tire flips, tactical rope climbs, sled/prowler push-drags, heavy sandbag cleans, high medicine wall-balls, or tactical push-ups.
  • Squad Movement Directive: The team cannot advance until all four runners complete their required repetitions. Once all four finish, the entire squad moves together into the trail network.
"Station 1 sets the tone for the entire morning. It isn't just about pure speed—it's about digging deep alongside your teammates right from the gun."

LEVELING UP THE TRIBUTE: AXXIS PRODUCTIONS BRINGS CONCERT SOUND, STAGING & CINEMA LIGHTING TO QUEENSLAKE

Thirty-three years ago on October 3–4, 1993, nineteen courageous American warriors of Task Force Ranger made the ultimate sacrifice in the dusty streets of Mogadishu, Somalia. Honoring their memory demands our absolute highest standard of excellence.
